Join Us Next Week at Our Senior Expo

I’m looking forward to the Senior Expo that I’m co-hosting with Sen. John Yudichak in Lehighton on Thursday, Sept. 5. This free event will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Co., 2440 Fairyland Road. Please note that my district offices will be closed on that day.

The expo is a great way for older residents to learn about programs and services available to them in our area. My staff and I will also be available to discuss any state government-related issue. We hope to see you there!

Scam Seminars for Seniors

Our thanks to David Shallcross, director of the senior protection unit with the Office of Attorney General, for conducting last Friday’s scam seminars at the Lehighton Elderly Apartments and Palmer House in Palmerton. He updated us on the latest scams targeting seniors and provided information on how not to become a victim.

Thanks for Taking Part

Thanks to everyone who participating in my telephone town hall meeting on Tuesday evening. We had a lively discussion on a variety of topics, including property tax reform, opioids and robo calls. If you missed out this time, I’m planning to host another one in a few months. Stay tuned for the details. These events are a great way for us to contact and talk about the issues that matter to you.

Congratulations!

Happy 65th anniversary to Donald and Betty Borger of Lehighton. It was my pleasure to present them with a House citation in recognition of their marital milestone.

Brody Acker is the 122nd Legislative District’s newest Eagle Scout. I had the pleasure of presenting Brody with a House citation during his Court of Honor ceremony last Sunday in recognition of his outstanding achievement. He’s a member of Troop 555 in Jim Thorpe. To fulfill the Eagle Scout community service requirement, Brody built four garden boxes for LB Morris Elementary School.

Capitalizing on Technology for Education

Recognizing the impact missing school can have on a student’s education, the General Assembly recently adopted two new laws to make better use of technology to limit, or even eliminate, these impacts.

Act 18 of 2019 creates the Keystone Telepresence Education Grant Program to provide funding to intermediate units for the purchase of equipment and related services to support homebound students. The technology is valuable for children with extended absences due to chronic illness, such as cancer, or recovery from surgery or injuries.

Act 64 of 2019 allows school districts, intermediate units, area vocational-technical schools and charter schools to establish a “flexible instructional day” program to use when school is closed due to weather, damage to the school building, disease epidemic or other temporary circumstances. Under the law, no more than five flexible instructional days may be used during a school year.

Hunter-Trapper Education Courses Available

State law requires all first-time hunters and trappers, regardless of age, to successfully complete Hunter-Trapper Education (HTE) training before they can buy a Pennsylvania hunting or trapping license.

Prospective hunters age 16 years or older may complete the study course entirely online. Or you may sign up for one of the classes being offered near you.
