A little more than 130 years ago, the idea of setting aside a day to honor the American flag was born. The first Flag Day, or Flag Birthday, as it was called at the time, was celebrated by school-aged children in Wisconsin. June 14 was selected to commemorate the date since it was on that day in 1777 when the American flag as we know it today was adopted. Since the first celebration, Flag Day has spread across the country.
