Heffley Reminds Residents of Changes to Pennsylvania’s Fireworks Law

LEHIGHTON – As the Fourth of July draws near, Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) is reminding residents of changes to Pennsylvania’s law regarding permissible fireworks.

“As this is the first Independence Day celebration with the new laws in place, my offices have understandably received numerous calls from residents with questions about Pennsylvania’s recently changed fireworks law,” Heffley said. “This change allows residents to buy more than just sparklers and foaming snakes.”

Under the new law, residents can now purchase an expanded variety of fireworks, such as firecrackers, Roman Candles, bottle rockets and similar fireworks that contain a maximum of 50 milligrams of explosive material. The purchase of fireworks remains limited to those age 18 and older.

Additionally, fireworks cannot be ignited on a public or private property without express permission of the property owner, discharged from or within a motor vehicle or building, discharged toward a motor vehicle or building, discharged within 150 feet of an occupied structure or discharged while the person is under the influence of alcohol, a controlled substance, or another drug.

“Most municipalities also have ordinances regarding fireworks. I encourage all residents to first check with their local municipality before setting off fireworks to make sure they fall within local ordinances,” Heffley said. “Independence Day is a joyous celebration of our country’s birth. I ask residents to act responsibly when setting off fireworks to avoid personal harm and damage to property.”
