HARRISBURG – Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) issued the following statement in response to Gov. Tom Wolf’s inaugural address. Wolf was sworn into office today for a second term during a ceremony at the state Capitol.
“Gov. Tom Wolf spoke a lot today about bipartisanship and working together. Over the last four years, there were times we were able to work with the governor on some initiatives and there were other times when we opposed him.
“Republicans control the House and Senate by rather comfortable majorities and we have a very liberal Democratic governor, but we’ve proven that we can work together. I would hope that the governor would look at the last year of his administration and what we were able to accomplish together and build on those successes.
“I’m hoping that as we move forward, we don’t have any long budget delays like we had in the governor’s first term. Obviously, we want to get the budget done on time to make sure schools are adequately funded without putting any extra burdens on taxpayers.
“We want to focus on some priorities the governor talked about to move Pennsylvania forward. We want to provide job opportunities for middle-class families by continuing to grow the economy. We certainly don’t want to put up any additional obstructions or burdens on the business community.
“One of the things the governor spoke about is road construction and bridge work. That’s something that is really needed throughout northeastern Pennsylvania and Carbon County. We look forward to holding the governor to those words because the vital link for commerce is to have a good highway system.
“I was disappointed the governor made no mention of property tax elimination, which is an issue that is a top priority for many of us in the Legislature. I plan to continue our work on enacting meaningful reforms in that regard.
“I’ll work with the governor on any issue if it’s good for the Commonwealth and the residents of the 122nd District. If we disagree on issues, I will oppose him and make sure we don’t pass bad policies. I’m really looking forward to it. I’m ready to get started.”
