State Funding for Carbon County
This week, I joined Sen. John Yudichak in announcing that seven improvement projects in Carbon County have been awarded $624,338 in funding, which the two of us worked together to secure.
Carbon County received a $158,338 grant to help complete its proposed Emergency Operations Training Center. The two-building complex will include live fire training sites, a drill tower, police training facility and classrooms where first responders can receive instruction and training. It will also house the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency.
Carbon County also received $169,069 on behalf of the Mauch Chunk Opera House in downtown Jim Thorpe for upgrades and renovations to the building, which include new stage curtains, an air conditioning system, sound absorption system, sound system and new console.
Other local projects that received funding include:
- Parryville Borough – $147,146 for improvements at the Carl Wolter III playground.
- Mahoning Township – $66,319 on behalf of the Mahoning Township Fire Company for its rehabilitation project.
- Lansford Borough – $40,444 for Phase II of its Downtown Streetscape Improvement Project.
- Jim Thorpe Borough – $24,631 for the purchase of automatic license plate readers for the police department.
- Lehighton Borough – $18,391 for the purchase of automatic license plate readers for the police department.

My Legislation on the Move
I am pleased to report legislation I am sponsoring passed out of the House Labor and Industry Committee this week and was sent to the House floor for consideration. House Bill 349 would give private homeowners and small businesses more options for inspection services related to the Uniform Construction Code.
My proposal would require municipalities to use at least two or more private agencies for inspection services, rather than just one. The legislation was the result of numerous complaints from homeowners in Carbon County and across the state, ranging from inconsistent interpretations of the code and long wait times to rude and unprofessional conduct.
The bill passed on second consideration Wednesday and is expected to come up for a final vote in the House early next month.

#GoodJobs4PA Initiative Advances
The #GoodJobs4PA workforce development bills are on their way to the Senate after last week’s passage in the House.
On Monday, I stood with other supporters at a Capitol news conference along with a great group of students from Dauphin County Technical School, who will benefit if the bills are signed into law. Our legislation would make it possible for more Pennsylvanians to access high quality training and find good-paying, family-sustaining careers. Learn more here.

Visiting the Capitol
On Tuesday, I had the pleasure of meeting with a group of teachers, including several from the Panther Valley School District, who were at the Capitol for Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) Advocacy Day. They are (from left to right) Frederick Herling, Kayla Field, Kiersten Rivera, Mandi Kusko, Jordan Zimmerman and Joe Zimmerman.

Palmerton Proud!
What a great time we had in Palmerton last week celebrating our two amazing Special Olympics champions! Congratulations to Delina Rodrigues, who took home the gold in power lifting at the World Games in Abu Dhabi; and to Matt Anthony, who won the National Special Olympics unified bowling competition with his father. It was truly my privilege to present each of them with a House citation in recognition of their outstanding achievements
