Carbon County Moving to ‘Yellow’ Phase, But Residents Must Remain Vigilant, Say Heffley, Yudichak, Knowles

WEISSPORT – Although they believe the decision should have come last week, Reps. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) and Jerry Knowles (R-Berks/Carbon/Schuylkill) and Sen. John Yudichak (I-14) are nonetheless pleased by today’s announcement from Gov. Tom Wolf that Carbon County will transition to the “yellow” phase of his reopening plan for Pennsylvania on Friday, May 22.

Carbon County was among 12 counties included on the governor’s latest “red to yellow” list. In the “yellow” phase, restrictions are loosened and certain businesses are allowed to resume operations under federal safety guidelines.

The three legislators issued the following statements regarding the governor’s announcement:

“We sincerely thank Carbon County residents for doing an amazing job in adhering to the social distancing guidelines that have allowed us to reach this point. However, all of us need to keep following them closely to mitigate the spread of the virus, including business owners who must safeguard the health of their employees and customers. I would also encourage residents to shop local and help those businesses that are allowed to reopen get back on their feet,” said Heffley. “Moving to the ‘yellow’ phase is just the next step in the process and does not mean we are returning to the way it was in March. We need to keep working together and respecting each other as we proceed to the ultimate goal of reaching the ‘green’ phase.”

“I would like to thank Gov. Wolf for making the correct decision today to move Carbon County into the ‘yellow’ phase of his reopening plan beginning on May 22,” said Yudichak. “As I stated in a recent joint letter to Gov. Wolf, Carbon County residents have done an extraordinary job of adhering to the governor’s stay-at-home order and social distancing protocols and not overwhelming our health systems. As we transition to the ‘yellow’ phase, Carbon County residents have proven that they will continue to act responsibly to halt the spread of the novel coronavirus in their communities.”

“I am happy for the people of Carbon County, particularly those I represent in Summit Hill, who are one step closer to resuming a normal life,” said Knowles.
