HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Supreme Court today sided with the Wolf administration and the Pennsylvania Democratic Party in allowing for ballots to be counted that are received up to three days after the election day deadline as long as they are postmarked on Nov. 3. The court’s decision also allows for the use of secure drop boxes for ballots.
Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon) issued the following statement regarding the ruling:
“Quite honestly, I was astounded by the ruling of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court today. They just took a law that was passed by the House and Senate and signed by the governor and rewrote it. The Supreme Court can judge whether a law is constitutional or not, but they cannot rewrite the law. They have now extended the deadline for mail-in balloting for no reason at all.
“This is really a political move by a democratic governor and a very far-left democratic Supreme Court which is not in line with the values of the residents of Pennsylvania. The ruling allows the governor to continue to count votes until he gets the result he wants. In our nation’s current political climate, the last thing we need is one party that is illegally counting ballots. We are going to become the next Florida, with the hanging chads.
“Neither the Democrats nor Republicans should stand for this type of maneuvering by any governor, who wants to effectually cheat in a democratic election. We are not a third-world country. This is the United States of America. We know how to run elections in the state of Pennsylvania, and what the Supreme Court did today was just ridiculous.”
