HARRISBURG – Twenty-five fire departments and ambulance associations in Carbon County were awarded a one-time state grant to assist with extra expenses resulting from the COVID-19 public health emergency, according to Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon).
A total of $50 million was made available through the Office of State Fire Commissioner (OSFC) to provide direct financial relief to first responders in Pennsylvania impacted by the pandemic. These funds are to be used to supplement operational expenses incurred by the lack of opportunities for fundraising and inability to create revenue due to compliance with measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
“There is no question the fundraising efforts of our dedicated first responders have become even more challenging this year,” Heffley said. “These grants will help them continue to provide critical emergency services to our communities in Carbon County.”
The following fire and ambulance companies in the 122nd Legislative District submitted applications and received funding:
• Albrightsville Volunteer Fire Company Inc. – $22,740.
• American Fire Company No. 1 of Lansford – $24,247.
• Aquashicola Volunteer Fire Company – $23,014.
• Beaver Meadows Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $23,425.
• Bowmanstown Volunteer Fire Company – $23,151.
• Citizens Fire Company No. 1 of Weatherly – $24,384.
• Diamond Engine Hose Hook and Ladder Company No. 2 – $24,657.
• Diligence Fire Company 1 – $24,247.
• East Penn Township Volunteer Fire Company – $23,425.
• Fairview Hose Company No. 2 – $23,014.
• Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Company – $22,740.
• Hauto Volunteer Fire Company – $24,384.
• Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company – $22,603.
• Lake Harmony Rescue and Ambulance Squad – $15,048.
• Lake Harmony Volunteer Fire Company – $22,740.
• Lehigh and Lausanne Rural Volunteer Fire Company – $23,425.
• Lehighton Ambulance Association – $5,856.
• Lehighton Fire Department – $25,205.
• Mahoning Valley Ambulance Association Inc. – $15,048.
• Mahoning Valley Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $24,657.
• Nesquehoning Hose Company No. 1 – $25,342.
• New Columbus Fire Company Inc. – $23,562.
• Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 1 – $22,603.
• Penn Forest Township Volunteer Fire Company No. 2 – $23,288.
Legislation creating the COVID-19 Crisis Fire and Emergency Medical Services Grant Program was passed unanimously by the General Assembly in May with funding support through the federal CARES Act.
As stated in
Act 26 of 2020, the money must be used for eligible expenses, including utilities, insurance, apparatus repairs, fuel, personal protective equipment, lost revenues due to pandemic restrictions, and the sanitizing of equipment and property.
